Semi-Weekly Reflection Prompts

Week 2 Prompt:

What kind of self-reflection experiences did you have in your freshman English
class? What have you learned (related to self-reflection or writing in general) that
has stayed with you and supported your writing?

The kind of self-reflection experiences I had in my freshman English class revolved around the usage of media and how social media and self-perception corresponded with one another. I had to review my research essay and my analysis essay on both topics. I learned that when it comes to my writing and reflections I don’t search for ways to grow. I don’t give myself feedback in terms of what I can do better in the future. Instead I analyze what my topic revolved around instead of finding a problem in my writing and find future ways to improve my writing so I won’t make a similar mistake.

Week 3 Prompt:

Analyze the rhetorical situation of your Freshman Portfolio. For those few students who do not have one only: analyze the rhetorical situation of your Freshman English research paper/project.

Author: Jamaal Thompson

Purpose: The purpose of my Freshman Portfolio was to show an overview of how I started off in creative writing on social media and present my transition throughout the course. With the use of peer reviews, peer discussions, outside texts and videos there was a significant change in my writing and my portfolio acknowledged all the main points.

Genre: Creative non-fiction

Media/Design: Written text

Week 4 Prompt:

Analyze the rhetorical situation of your Product Review essay.

Author: Jamaal Thompson

Purpose: The purpose of my product review essay is to inform the benefits and downfalls of my product by providing a subjective point of view examining the usage of the product and the criteria. Criteria such as the effectiveness, cost, durability, stability and efficiency. Competitive gamers are then aware of the benefits that my product provides and how that will allow them to play more efficiently but also reap the benefits.

Genre: Non-fiction

Media/Design: Written Text

Audience: Competitive Gamers

Stance: My stance is subjective. I have no say in how the AOC gaming monitor affected me and more of analyzing the use of the product and the disadvantages and advantages of the monitor.

Week 5 Prompt:

What have we done so far that has been helpful to your writing process? How might you apply this helpful information or tool? What has been confusing/What would you like to spend more time on? If the clarification/additional focus does not occur during class time, how will you acquire the knowledge?

I used Purdue owl to learn how to write memos and cite texts in APA or MLA format. I didn’t know how to write a memo after my technical description or my other writing assignments so after thoroughly reading I was able to gather different methods to simply present the intro, data collected and conclusion in a 1–2-page memo. This can be helpful overall by learning how to cite my sources instead of relying on citing websites to generate I wrote down general examples of APA citations from Purdue Owl and rewrote them for each article I chose. I am still confused on how to articulate my writing firmly and clear to the audience without creating a subjective claim. In order to acquire the knowledge I missed in class I can use the general documents section to find the article best suited for my work.

Week 6/7 Prompt:

To be completed after you have received feedback on your essay:
Analyze the rhetorical situation of your Lab Report Analysis essay. Include textual
detail to support your claims
.

Author: Jamaal Thompson

Purpose: Analyze 3 different lab reports with a objective standpoint and determine the strategies used for each lab report and compare the quality of their work in regards to covid-19 and the impact it has on mental health.

Stance: Lab Report 2 has the best lab report as they have a better structure of their experiment, clear and concise, main points are mentioned in the beginning to the end, and the discussion analyzed the studies to its full extent with limitations.

Week 8 Prompt:

How are you using the labor log? Is it working for you? If yes, for what purposes? If not, why? In either case, include at least one specific example.

I used the labor log from from January 30th to February 15th. I don’t really stay updated with the labor logs because we have a syllabus contained with every assignment, the due dates and what to be prepared for in the general documents so labor logs don’t work for me.

Week 9 Prompt:

What experience have you had working in groups before this class? How has the
group work we’ve done in this class been for you? What are you doing/will you do
to optimize your experience completing the collaborative project for this class?

In regards to group work, I was never able to work well with people I don’t know in groups. The reason for that is because the chemistry wasn’t there, I had no information about the person and it feels fast-paced because we have to force a bond to get the work done. Now that I have taken Writing for Engineering, my perspective has changed drastically because my peers have the same ambition I have and whether that is for engineering or science, we have passions to be on the field and in order to get assignments done we have to work together on lab reports, analyze products, and manufacture innovations as a group. The collaborative discussion allows me to get accustomed to people more and creating leadership abilities.

Week 10 Prompt:

Analyze the rhetorical situation of your Technical Description. Include textual detail to support your claims.

Author: Jamaal Thompson

Genre: Non-Fiction

Media/Design: Written Text

Audience: Manufacturers of the DualShock 4 controller

Stance: No position

Week 13 Prompt:

Select one learning objective or one component of a learning objective. When,
where, and how have you learned it? How have you developed in this arena?

One learning objective that I learned was creating outlines. I was taught how to create outlines back in high school whenever scholars and I would prepare for an upcoming essay we would have our topics and section our ideas on the outline so when it came to the point where we would have to write the essay we already have our ideas. I was never fond of using outlines to write my essay’s and I would just start with reverse outlines. Using outlines for my essay helps me construct my argument better, gather my evidence and interpret each idea and relate it back to my claim. I did my first outline on my RCA and it helped me develop my argument better. I was able to section my evidence onto the right claim and my reasoning brought new ideas to the table and not restating my evidence.

Week 14 Prompt:

What have you learned that has proved most useful to your composition process?

What I learned that has proved to be the most useful to my composition process is revising what I write before I make any final decisions. I also learned how to collaborate as a group and articulate ideas and incorporate them into our work. That way we can work better as a team because 4 ideas are greater than 1. I also learned how to analyze lab reports and determine ways that they can improve their ideas in regards to their methods, discussion, introduction and many more.
