Dear Professor Rodwell,
Good afternoon Professor Rodwell. I hope all is well with you and your family. My name is Jamaal Thompson, and I am a Freshman at The City College of New York. My intended major at CCNY is Mechanical Engineering. Mechanical engineering is one of the broadest majors allowing me to have many opportunities for different positions and roles when I grow up. When I was young, I was always interested in Legos. Whenever I got a new pack for my birthday or Christmas it would take me around 1-2 hours to complete the design and I always switched them around to my liking. Initially I started manufacturing houses, robots, and marvel characters. But as time progressed, I moved onto building Lego cars, ships, helicopters, and motor parts. One of my favorite subjects is mathematics and in order to be an engineer, mathematics is a requirement along with science. As an upcoming engineer, knowing how to problem solve and design consistent innovations is essential and because I was introduced to certain aspects of design I was fantasized at a young age.
Some short term goals I have in order to achieve my goal of a being a mechanical engineer manufacturer is starting off by taking internships. At CCNY they have many engineering programs inside the GROVE school. I intend to participate in those events in order to get an understanding of the roles and responsibilities engineers play. Since engineering is a huge factor in keeping society balanced by using science and mathematics to create new ways to benefit the human race, I want to gather intel on how cars are produced, buildings are structured and how engineers create different alternatives when depicting the right methods. I also intend to partake in an MTA internship for young engineers. My mom works for the MTA and informed me that they’re looking for workers desperately in the engineering field. I have future goals to go through the program and work in subways, busses and create new methods to benefit mankind.
When it comes to my long term goals, I keep my options open because mechanical engineering is a very broad study. I like to learn about how cars are manufactured and how technology plays a role in conducting those developments. Electrical engineering was my initial choice in regards to my major because I am very good at technology and processing electrical equipment so one of the jobs that I have in mind is being a Tesla mechanical design engineer where they analyze, produce, experiment and document different prototypes of Tesla’s. Being a tesla engineer is very rigorous, but I would either keep that option open when I get a better understanding and conduct more experiments as I progress along my college semesters. In addition, I have future goals to work with my dad. My dad is my idol and since I am a hard worker I would surround myself around people who have the same mindset as me. My dad is one of them and taking an engineering course would set me up for success so I can get a head start on the type of materials engineers focus on. Those are my short-term goals, my long term goals and what keeps me motivated throughout my engineering journey. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter and I hope you have a blessed day.
Sincerely,
Jamaal Thompson
